CNCF Cloud Native Landscape: The Complete Guide

The CNCF Cloud Native Landscape is the definitive map of cloud native technologies, cataloging over 1,000 projects and products across the ecosystem. But with so many projects, how do you know which categories and tools actually matter?

We analyzed GitHub popularity data for every major landscape project using a compound metric that weights stars, forks, and CNCF maturity level. This article covers the 8 categories that ranked highest — and explains why they deserve your attention.

How We Ranked the Categories

Our compound metric formula:

score = (normalized_stars × 0.5) + (normalized_forks × 0.3) + (CNCF_maturity_bonus × 0.2)
final_score = category_score × trend_multiplier

Maturity bonuses: graduated = 1.0, incubating = 0.7, sandbox = 0.4, non-CNCF = 0.2

Trend multipliers: Categories with accelerating growth receive a boost (CNAI = 2.0x, Wasm = 1.5x, Observability = 1.2x).

Data collected from the GitHub API on April 1, 2026.

The 8 Hottest Categories

1. Orchestration & Management — Score: 2.509

The backbone of cloud native infrastructure. This category dominates with 254,229 combined stars across its top 5 projects.
